Ophiabus "Nitro" Leipowitz (who goes by the nickname "Nitro" not because he has any sort of dislike for his unusual first name, but simply because other people have difficulty pronouncing and spelling it) is a fourteen-year-old scientific genius who has been moved ahead several grades in school and is now a Junior at Frackstonville High. Aside from his grade level, most faculty members at the school (and other adults, for that matter) rarely, if ever, acknowledge Nitro's baffling IQ because they don't like the idea of someone that young being that much smarter than them. It makes them feel stupid. Similarly, Nitro was receiving government grants toward scientific research for some time, but the funding was soon cut when his studies were shown to prove the existence of God.

Despite the constant condemnation from his "superiors," not to mention his highly dysfunctional family, Nitro remains undaunted and continues to pursue his goals no matter what the cost: To prove to the world that science and the supernatural are not two separate entities, to prove that many scientific "mysteries" can only be explained via supernatural means, and to improve society with his discoveries.

He also has a wild infatuation with Jess that refuses to waver no matter how often she beats the snot out of him. Guess he goes for strong women. Or he's got some masochism issues from his family.
